Arabesque

Dance portraits printed on silk

Arabesque - dance portrait with elena saorin - by emma bailey photographer bpf 12 2

Arabesque’ is a graceful position in dance. In an ongoing project, I have

collaborated with dancers Elena Saorin and Leo Brizad to create a series of images
exploring motion. My background in filmmaking has drawn my attention to the way
different mediums interpret light. I have developed a visual language that
encompasses multi disciplinary philosophies. I look to the work of such artists as
Degas, Vittorio Storaro, Caravaggio, Pina Bausch and the Impressionists; drawing
inspiration from their emphasis on capturing light and movement. I have
experimented with these ideas further by printing onto fabric, as a member of the
audience you are welcome to touch the pieces, to become involved in their movement.
The agitation of the fabric raises awareness of both the abstract nature of the
image as well as of the texture within it.

The Printing

Each photograph is printed onto Silk Habouti by Cameron Gilmartin who I have worked closely with for this exhibition. They have extensive experience in traditional and digital areas, for both the fashion industry and home interiors.  The fabric is pre-coated, digitally printed then steamed and washed.

Brighton Photo Fringe runs along side Brighton Photo Biennial, they offer a great opportunity for any lens based artist to exhibit and work together as a community with help and creative support. My exhibition is part of over 160 happening in Brighton from October to November.
